A SCARCE .44-40 SIX-SHOT SINGLE-ACTION REVOLVER, MODEL 'XL8 "TRANSITIONAL" ARMY', serial no. 421,
circa 1880, with round 3 7/8in. sighted barrel (possibly expertly shortened in antiquity), crescent fore-sight, sighting groove to the top-strap, the top-strap also marked 'HOPKINS & ALLEN MFG CO PAT MCH. 28. 71, MAY 27. 79' and 'XL No8 CAL WINCHESTER 1873', underbarrel swing-out ejector stored in the cylinder arbor, fluted cylinder, solid frame, colour-hardened hammer trigger and trigger-guard bow, smooth walnut grips (possibly slimmed) and lanyard ring at heel, the whole retaining much possibly original nickel-plated finish

Other Notes: The XL No. 8 Army Revolver was officially only produced in .44 rimfire and in barrel lengths of 4 1/2, 6 and 7 1/2in. After the acquisition of Merwin & Hulbert, certain guns were offered as a special order in other chamberings, such as the example presented here
